About the Club

Our Location

Torside reservoir was constructed in 1864 to supply drinking water to Greater Manchester. It is the largest artificial lake in the Longdendale Valley, covering an area of 160 acres, and when full is 2.25 km long, 26m deep and holds 6,700 megalitres (nearly 1.5 million gallons). Our position in the heart of the Peak District gives us an unrivalled setting and the prevailing South Westerly winds blow down the lake from the dam to the clubhouse providing club members with the best sailing in the region.

History of the Club

Glossop & District Sailing Club was originally started by local enthusiasts in the 1970s, initially on Bottoms Reservoir, moving to Torside Reservoir in 1984. Since then, the club has grown its facilities through the voluntary efforts of its members and with assistance from local sports grants. In 1995 we built the race control centre and boat-store, and in 2004 we widened our slipway. A grant from the Awards for All lottery fund in 2006 allowed us to refurbish the clubhouse galley and bar, and we aim to continue to continuously improve our facilities for sailors and visitors. Now Glossop Sailing Club, we welcome members from across the whole of Greater Manchester and the High Peak.

What we offer

Sailing is whatever you wish it to be: some of us crave the adrenaline and challenges of fast-action racing, whilst others prefer a leisurely afternoon on the water with the family. Either way, Torside is large enough to accommodate both, with plenty of attractive scenery to look at as you sail. Whether you do it standing up on a board or sitting in a dinghy is entirely up to you!
